Pocket money FAQs
Getting started
What is Study Rewards?
An optional way to reward your child with pocket money for studying with Alex. You choose the amounts, Quelo keeps track of what they earn, and you pay them directly.
Does Quelo pay my child?
No. Quelo never handles any money. We record what your child has earned and tell you; you decide when and how to pay them.
Do I have to use it?
No, it's off unless you turn it on. Quelo works exactly the same without it, and your child's study streak still unlocks their full revision guide each term.
How do I turn it on?
Choose Yes when we ask during sign-up, or at any time in the Parent Portal under Rewards, then Turn on pocket money. We'll email you to confirm.
How your child earns
How does my child earn pocket money?
Two ways:
- Study streak — two quizzes a week, in any four weeks of a term, earns the streak amount once that term.
- Topics — each topic in your child's year pays as their quiz score improves: above 50%, then 80% or above, then 80% or above on two quizzes in a row.
Does my child need to pass quizzes to earn the study streak?
No. Any completed quiz counts towards the streak. It rewards turning up and putting in the effort.
How do the topic levels add up?
Each level is the total that topic is worth once it's reached. As your child moves up, they earn the difference. On the suggested amounts for Years 7–10:
| Quiz result on one topic | Topic worth | Earned |
|---|---|---|
| Above 50% | $5 | $5 |
| 80% or above | $15 | $10 more |
| 80% or above on two quizzes in a row | $30 | $15 more |
A topic is worth $30 at most. If your child scores 80% on their first quiz, they earn $15 straight away.
Can a lower score take money back?
No. Anything earned stays earned.
Can my child earn the same topic twice?
No. Each topic level pays once, and each term's streak pays once.
Which quizzes count?
Topics from your child's own year earn topic money. Revision quizzes on earlier years and Stretch quizzes don't earn topic money, but they do count towards the study streak.
Amounts
What are the suggested amounts?
| Years 7–10 | Years 11–12 | |
|---|---|---|
| Study streak, per term | $75 | $100 |
| Each topic above 50% | $5 | $10 |
| Each topic at 80% or above | $15 | $30 |
| Each topic at 80% or above on two quizzes in a row | $30 | $70 |
They're around what a part-time fast-food job might pay at their age, earned by studying with Quelo instead.
What's the most I could pay?
If your child earns everything across Maths and English on the suggested amounts, the most in a year is:
| Year | Standard | Advanced / Extension |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | $900 | $960 |
| 8 | $1,020 | $1,080 |
| 9 | $990 | $1,110 |
| 10 | $960 | $1,230 |
| 11 | $1,240 | $1,310 / $1,520 |
| 12 | $1,170 | $1,310 / $1,450 |
Most children won't earn everything, and you only pay what they earn. Your Rewards tab always shows what's still possible for your child.
Can I choose my own amounts?
Yes. Choose Set my own amounts at sign-up, or Change amounts in the Rewards tab. Pick from the list or enter any whole-dollar amount. If a level pays the same as or less than the one before, we'll show a warning, but the choice is yours.
What happens when my child moves up a year?
On the suggested amounts, they move up to the Years 11–12 amounts automatically when your child reaches Year 11. Your own amounts stay the same in every year.
What happens if I change the amounts?
New amounts apply from that day. Anything your child has already earned stays at the amount it was earned at. We'll email you to confirm the change.
I'm turning it on partway through a term. Does earlier work count?
Yes. Everything your child has achieved since the start of the term counts. Before you confirm, we show you what they've already earned this term. Whether you pay for that earlier work is up to you.
Paying your child
How will I know what to pay?
On Friday evenings (7 pm Sydney time), we email you what your child earned that week and what to pay. If they didn't earn anything that week, we won't email you. Everything is also in the Rewards tab.
How do I record that I've paid?
Tick Paid next to the reward in the Rewards tab. It saves straight away, and your child sees it as paid.
Do I have to pay for everything shown?
It's your family's arrangement. Quelo keeps the record; you decide what to pay and when.
What your child sees
What does my child see?
A pocket money card on their dashboard showing how much they can learn and earn this term, and a view-only copy of your Rewards page. Topic cards don't show amounts.
Can my child change the amounts or tick Paid?
No. Only you can change amounts, turn pocket money on or off, or tick Paid.
Turning it off
What happens if I turn it off?
Your child stops earning and can no longer see their rewards. Everything they earned stays in your Rewards tab, where you can still view it and tick Paid. We'll email you to confirm.
Can I turn it back on?
Yes, at any time. As when you first turn it on, everything your child has achieved since the start of that term counts.
Emails and more than one child
Which emails will I get?
The Friday email in weeks your child earned something, and a confirmation whenever you change the amounts or turn pocket money on or off. You can stop the Friday email under Email preferences; the confirmations still come.
I have more than one child. How does it work?
Each child has their own amounts and their own Rewards tab, chosen from the dropdown. You'll get a separate Friday email for each child who earned something that week.
Other questions
Will Alex talk to my child about pocket money?
No. Alex is there to help with study. If your child asks about pocket money, Alex will suggest they talk to you.
Does it work if my child only needs help with one subject?
Yes. Every child has both Maths and English, but they can earn from whichever they study. Quizzes in either subject count towards the study streak.
What information do you keep?
The amounts you choose, what your child has earned and when, and what you've marked as paid. We use it only to show you and your child their rewards. See our Privacy Policy for more.
